Signs of a Rodent Infestation
Rats and mice often stay hidden, but they leave behind signs of their activity. Recognizing these warning signs early can help prevent a larger infestation. Common signs include:
- Scratching Sounds: Scratching, squeaking, or scampering noises from walls, ceilings, attics, or crawl spaces may indicate rodent activity. Since rats and mice are most active at night, these sounds are often easier to hear after dark.
- Rub Marks: Rodents often follow the same routes throughout a home, leaving behind dark, greasy marks along walls, baseboards, pipes, and other surfaces. These streaks are caused by dirt and oils from their fur rubbing against surfaces.
- Rodent Droppings: Finding small, dark droppings is one of the most common signs of a rodent problem. Fresh droppings may indicate that rats or mice are actively living or traveling nearby.
- Gnaw Marks: Because rodents’ teeth continue growing throughout their lives, they constantly chew on materials to keep them worn down. Fresh gnaw marks on wood, wiring, plastic, or food packaging can be a sign of active rodents.
- Nests: Rats and mice build nests using soft materials such as shredded paper, insulation, fabric, and other available items. These hidden nests are often found in quiet areas like attics, wall voids, basements, and crawl spaces.
