Fleas in McAlpin

Fleas are small, wingless parasites that feed on the blood of mammals and birds. They have specially adapted mouthparts that pierce the skin and suck blood, and they’re capable of jumping alarming distances just to reach a host. Though they’re most commonly associated with dogs and cats, they may still feed on humans or other animals. Since they thrive and reproduce quickly in warmer environments, they’re usually a bigger problem in the spring and early summer.

Flea Habitat

Fleas thrive in warm, humid environments and are commonly found in areas frequented by pets and wildlife, such as homes with dogs and cats, yards, and parks. They prefer to live in carpeted or upholstered areas indoors, as well as in shady, protected outdoor locations like under decks and in animal burrows. Despite their extremely small size, fleas have strong hind legs that enable them to jump up to 7 inches vertically and 13 inches horizontally, allowing them to move quickly between hosts. Flea infestations can spread rapidly indoors, with female fleas laying up to 50 eggs per day. These eggs can fall off pets onto carpets, furniture, bedding, and cracks in flooring.

Flea Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Flea bites are itchy and annoying, though many people underestimate how dangerous these pests can actually be—especially to pets. Their bites may cause health issues, particularly in small or young pets, including flea allergy dermatitis, an allergic reaction to flea saliva, and anemia, especially in young or small pets.
