Ghost Ants in McAlpin

Ghost ants are a common household pest in McAlpin as they are a tropical and subtropical species of ant. They are usually found in temperate climates and frequently find their way into structures and buildings. When foraging for food, they are found in kitchens and bathroom sinks, counters, and floors. Ghost ant colonies have the potential to be moderate to large (100 to 1000 insects) with multiple queens. The ant is easily identified with its small size, dark head, and light body. When they are crushed, they excrete a coconut smell.

Ghost Ant Habitat

The ghost ant prefers to live in a humid habitat and its nests can be found in rotten wood, soil, leaf litter, under bark, and inside plant cavities. They enter through cracks around soffits, doors, and windows, and once inside the home, they will nest in bread boxes, potted plants, behind baseboards, between cabinets, and in shower curtain rods. These pests will also gain entry into structures from surrounding vegetation. Nests constructed outdoors are located in the soil next to foundations, porches, trees, and shrubs, Another favorite nesting site includes the hollow framing of pool enclosures.

Ghost Ant Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

The ghost ant will only bite when it feels threatened and does not sting. Should they come indoors, they will mostly gravitate towards the kitchen, although infestations can occur in any room. Ghost ants need moisture to survive, so they will often wander to sinks, toilets, bathtubs, and shower stalls. When in the kitchen, they search for sweets, but will also consume grease. They tend homopterans, (a sucking insect) for honeydew and eat  both living and dead insects. If you suspect a ghost ant infestation, it is best to consult a licensed ant exterminator.
