DIY Pest Control Tips to Avoid Halloween Pests

A chill is in the air and we’re all starting to decorate for Halloween using spiders, rats, and other creepy crawlers. Fall pests are starting to creep and crawl all about our homes and businesses. Halloween displays set aside, here are some tips from keeping the real pests at bay this time of year!

Spiders – they’re much better outside than in

While spiders are beneficial garden insects, they’re not so great inside. To keep spiders at bay: seal gaps, caulk crevices and openings around the home and windows. Vacuum any spiders and cobwebs inside your home and make sure you empty afterwards. Consider monitoring spider activity inside your home with glue boards to see if you have an occasional spider or a problem that needs professional attention.

Mice – beware of the pumpkin eaters

Mice can enter your home by the smallest hole – it only takes a dime size hole for a mouse to enter any dwelling. To keep mice at bay: fill any holes or cracks. Make sure there aren’t any plumbing leaks as they’re drawn to moisture.

Cockroaches – known to crawl around areas that are dirty

Help keep them at bay by making sure all window seals and door jams are free of holes and replace weather stripping as needed. Keep curtains closed at night and keep the door closed as much as possible. Replace or repair torn window screens.

Pumpkin Pest Prevention – choose the right location to display your seasonal pumpkin

While fresh pumpkins are a traditional décor for Halloween, they also draw a plethora of pests. Pumpkins displayed outdoors are a great attractant for mice and rodents, fruit flies, roaches and more. Keep your pumpkin free of pests by:

  • Displaying in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and rot from setting in early.
  • Avoid attracting rodents by adding a coat of hot pepper sauce to the inside and outside of your pumpkin.
  • Everyday, spray your pumpkin with a mix of bleach water to keep fruit flies and other flying insects away.
